Accelerated Corrosion in Air Handlers

09/26/2014 10:07 AM

I have seen evidence of accelerated corrosion rates internal to air handling equipment serving a data center. Some galvanic, some "yellow", as well as other types. The piping is a combination of "black iron", copper, brass, and galvanized. There are some instances where galvanic isolators are installed, but not 100% of the fasteners/connections have them. Any experience out there as to what are some plausible causes of accelerated corrosion rates in a controlled environment?

Less than 100% galvanic isolation is the obvious one. What is not obvious is why you have let this fester.

Thanks for the reply. It is not my data center. I was given some pictures and asked if I'd seen this rapid rate of corrosion before. This was new to me, so I thought I'd "ask around."

You should do in inventory of the ones and zeros in the data center. If any of them are leaking out then they could cause corrosion. .... Sorry, I thought I was on the Dilbert message board. That response would work there.

So, since you are asking about black iron, copper, brass and galvanized are you talking about freon lines, heat exchanger plates, something else? People that don''t know much about air conditioners might be able to help with a little more information.

Bruce, I'm referring to chilled water lines; no Freon.

It sounds like the cleaning chemicals being used to clean the coils are not being rinsed properly or ph corrected....are you sure it's corrosion and not some fungal growth?...it can take some very weird forms...Another possibility is that some aerosols are being used in the conditioned space causing reaction....Any of the motors or wiring could have a partial short causing undetected voltage flow....The materials could have been exposed to chemicals or conditions unknown prior to installation.....the construction materials could have been substandard to begin with...the equipment may have been installed incorrectly to begin with, and/or improperly maintained....

Thank you. You've confirmed some of my concerns about incorrect installation and improper maintenance. These certainly are items I will address with the owner and facility manager.
