Steel Deep Drawing Lubricant

10/01/2014 11:53 AM

What lubricant is recommended for deep drawing 2 mm (width) SAE-AISI 1020 steel? The operation will be performed in a hydraulic press. From what I've seen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFHS7oCSqRU), a grease is painted on the blanket sheets.

There are many lubricants commercially available specifically for deep drawing applications. Google "deep drawing oil" I have used many formulations ranging from lard oil to STP™

Thank you for your response. In your experience, which one is easier to remove? Preferrably with hot pressurized water.

Neither of the lubricants that I mentioned are easy to remove without the now illegal chlorinated solvents that were used in my day. That is why you should investigate some of the vendors you will find in Google or IHS GlobalSpec. Cleanability is one of the important attributes specified for deep drawing lubricants.

There are a few parameters that have to be considered. This may help.

That's a very good reference to start with.

Your lubricant supplier should be able to help with this.

Local suppliers have no idea. I read that dry films are quite effective, and they have the advantage that there's no oil residue after.
