Disconnecting it will reduce the leakage reactance to zero.

You have given us far too much information already. Please, do not answer any questions about this problem.

I guess reverse psychology will not work either. <sigh>

It's real easy if you pay attention in class. Then apply your newly acquired knowledge to what ever type of transformer your working with!

Back to Transformers 101. First you need to understand what the sources of leakage reactance are, then you may be able to plug some of those leaks.

There are no "Thumb Rules" for this, just good, solid engineering knowledge. You can start by reading the "J&P Transformer Book", then you may be in a position to understand the enormity of your task.

You're going to have to get that knowledge the old fashioned way, by investing time and effort to learn it.

In the past, I have used Acme Transformer Reactance Dope with great success. Unfortunately the state of California found it to cause cancer in the Sri Lanken twisted newt spider and the UN had it removed from the market.

It was also found to contribute significantly to global warming by wiping out all the ozone over California, and Washington, DC.

You could try potting the transformer using a non-conductive epoxy potting compound.

I won't tell you however if this will actually work or not, you will have to do your own research in to that.

;)

If I'm not mistaken there are only a few states where you can get legally potted.

One should NOT smoke epoxy (for reasons which should be obvious).

What we have here, is failure to communicate.

Leakage reactance is often a function of the transformer design (as opposed to the construction). Locate a lower reactance transformer design.

Use a shell-type transformer vs. a core-type to reduce leakage reactance. Each type has their own advantages and disadvantages.
