Master’s Degree – Postgraduate… What Should I Do?

10/20/2014 10:23 PM

Hello!!!!!! I'm new around here, and I recently graduated from Civil Engineer. I live in the Dominican Republic (Caribbean - Near Puerto Rico). I am 22 years old. I am looking to do a Master's Degree or postgraduate. The thing is, I do not know which area/specialization fits better to my likes.

I am looking for some advice, recommendation, or comment on the different areas that the civil engineer offers in which they include (some, if all better): creation, design, tampering, computing (&Technology in general), not jobbed-attached (Something which I can undertake later on).

Thanks a million :D !!!

Sounds to me like you are looking to use the creative side of your brain instead of just the analytical side. Have you considered architecture or sculpture? Both of these artistic venues require some solid foundation (pun intended) work.

@redfred:

Haha ;) Actually yes. I love combining both things: Analysis and Creativity. I feel like the one who should be creating stuff, from the designing process to its construction.

I love seeing how things work, and how can I improve them. (I tamper with stuff a lot)

@jack of all trades: Yup. I'm working on a road project that will unite two important points in my country as an intern.

One of the areas I really liked through my career was Topography.

@IdeaSmith: Thanks :). I'd like to know which areas of Civil Engineer can offer that. And when I talk about "non-job attached" is to refer to something that I can do in my own, because when I can only apply it in a job, that means that I am limited by somebody else who will control my time, my creativity, money (how much will I earn), and is not something that I could own.

Thanks for the answers!

Have you considered getting some work experience in some areas you think you may like first to see what appeals to you and to give you a better idea of what to specialise in?

Which specialisation is available?

What are the descriptions of those and what would better fit your likes?

Not sure about the comment "not jobbed attached".

Surley a job will have to come out of it and if rather earlier than later the better it is.

It seems you lean towards reserarch and development from the points you quoted.

R&D might be the way to go!

I would go for a MBA in project management and your PE. From there you can get a job in what ever career path feels like a fit for you.
