Whats the context? It might be one and the same or unbalanced bearings compared to imbalance in the fitting of Rotor and Stator.

Semantics, definition, and grammar. Imbalance is a noun, unbalance can be either a noun or a verb. Google on each word separately and you'll see the difference and similarities, neither of which makes much of a difference to an engineer.

Impbalance is a little devil on tiptoes.

If you are talking about a turbine type compressor, unless you are maintaining flow you can get surging (oscillation of the turbines) between stages, which I suppose could be called "imbalance". This type of compressor usually has RF probes at the ends of the shafts to sense this.

Unbalance -

verb (used with object), unbalanced, unbalancing.

1. to throw or put out of balance.

2. to disorder or derange, as the mind.

Imbalance -

noun

1. the state or condition of lacking balance, as in proportion or distribution.

2. faulty muscular or glandular coordination.

Does that help?

If you use the word "wobbly" instead, then it wouldn't matter.
