Busway System Instead of CU Cables

Dear Fellows!

we are starting a new project (Textile plant). we have finalized our work regarding CU-cables, CU BTDs etc. Some one has told me about BUS-WAY system instead of using cables. Kindly guide/share your experiences regarding this as i haven't grasped his idea completely.

One major consideration when opting for a Bus-Way type distribution and control system is the preventative maintenance required to keep the enclosures and electrical buss clean, torqued, and tested on a regular interval.

Once cables are installed properly and if their insulation characteristics are correct for the application, they require a minimum of maintenance over a very long period of time.

Another consideration is the quantity of dedicated critical space required for the Bus-Way equipment mounting from location to location.

In my opinion a combination of cabling and a Bus-Way type system is the most efficient method.

In busway system of sufficient capacity by fixing tap-offs future extensions are easily done byt if main CB trip there will be a complete power interruption. In cable system for future extensions new cables should be laid from MSB.

It could be that the term plugway system better describes what he meant rather than a busway system, which is normally associated with busbars. Don't be put off by the cost of the components for this type of system. By the time installation labour is added these systems and conventional wiring are roughly the same. The main benefit is flexibility, especially if you intend to instigate product "cells" within your production. An over-locker or a pressing station can be dropped into a cell easily and the cell footprint can be adjusted to accomadate the new items. At the end of a production run the cell can be dismantled and a new cell configured for the next product in a couple of hours. Also a sewing machine fitter can swap out a faulty unit with a spare in a matter of minutes without the need for an electrician, so very little loss of production associated with breakdowns. There are lots of manufacturers, the link is typical of what is on offer (I've never dealt with this particular company so no recommendation is given or implied.)

Dedicated cable runs or busduct/busbar systems are a matter of choice. Dedicated cable runs are exactly that and leave little or no room for changes, expansion etc.. Installation of the proper size busduct allows for all these. Easy as unplugging the busplug and relocating it and related (probably short run) of cable. Need to add something, add another plug close to where you need it.

If you know that the machinery layout is "never" going to change, it will be more economical to do direct cable runs or a large cable run to a distribution panel. If you want to have greater flexibility spend the additional money up front as it will save you money later.

Personally speaking, my preference is a busduct system, but I have always worked in shops where flexibility of electrical connections was a must as equipment is move around for specific projects.
