Will Improved Communications Take Us Back to Normal?

12/29/2014 12:50 PM

If one examines the changes in lifestyle over the last few generations, it becomes obvious that many of "the old ways" have been rejected in the interest of independence. And while that has some advantages, it also has several disadvantages including overpopulation and general loss of wisdom as families separate much sooner than in centuries past.

While nothing can really replace one on one interaction, in person, I am begining to see some benefits of being more connected via all of this technology. The unfortunate part of that comes from the "blind" leading the "blind" by texting friends rather than consulting with more experienced parents or grandparents. It makes me think we are approaching a "hive mentality" which is still very much in its infancy.

I suppose it will be obvious soon enough, but I see a lot of repeated mistakes that simply weren't made in centuries past. Collectively, we seem to be at a loss for benefiting from other peoples mistakes such as living beyond our means. This simply was not done in the past without severe self inflicted consequences. Is there a chance that applications like social networks will evolve enough to be educational?

Everything that is "social" evolves in all possible directions, not just one, or necessarily the right ones or even the politically correct ones.

Where I work we have a saying, "When all else fails try talking to each other."

It's purely a last resort option.

Rejecting the old ways for independence and be coming dependent on a social network. Seems like a failed change of life style if one was looking for independence.

Getting guidance and information from someone you know and trust like a family member. Over some AP that you have no knowledge of in a social network. Seems to me the only education you will get is mistrust. As many use this media to prey on the naive and innocent. I'm sure there are other lesson to learn along those lines.

Can it evolve beyond that. Sure if everyone is willing to give up their anonymity. To be accountable for what they say.

Accountable? We've been denying responsibility for so long we actually believe ourselves!

"Sure if everyone is willing to give up their anonymity"

Let's start here. Sure, we'd still be just a name. But, that name would have a record attached to it of everything it said.

No more Anons.

"Improved"? communications? Nope. Just more disconnection.

How do you define normal?

I've had many "normals" inmy lifetime.

No indoor plumbing.

No telephone.

No television.

No 8 tracks.

No computers.

No money.

Shall I go on?
