Are Smartphone Accelerometers Useful For Vibration Characterization?

01/12/2015 11:34 PM

I've found several accelerometer apps for smartphones (for example http://www.iseismometer.com and http://www.now-instruments.com/products/3-vibsensor ). Are these useful for doing quantitative vibration analysis, and if not, what are their deficiencies?

Not necessarily bad items for spot check but the software does not allow quantitative analysis.

Your equipment deserves better than a smart phone app to insure the longevity of a large capitol outlay.

But just as a spot check, yes I use mine due to the handiness of it.

Anybody tried Accelogger?

I downloaded it just for fun, but no longer have any way to calibrate/check it.

No (IMO). I tried a few of them to try to find a tailshaft vibration issue (car) but gave up and bought a 3 axis accelerometer off eBay and used it with a CRO. The apps were just too slow to be any use. The logging interval in particular was too slow for my purposes.
