Japan May Require Microchips for Dangerous Animals

10/13/2005 4:30 PM

Japan's Environment Ministry is drafting a law that would require tiny, cylindrical microchips to be implanted under the skin of some 650 animal species. Each microchip would carry information making it possible to trace the owner if the animal goes missing. The move follows a recent wave of incidents around the nation in which animals such as pythons, crocodiles and giant salamanders have been found wandering loose, frequently on the streets of densely populated cities.

Sensible

This seems like a sensible idea. In the U.S., many pet owners "microchip" their animals so that if they're picked up by the pound, they can be returned to their rightful owners.
