Bluetooth Compatibility for MotoQ

07/09/2007 10:34 AM

Can anyone tell me where I might find a good source for researching the compatibility of Bluetooth Headsets for cellphones? The company I work for has just issued staff Motorola MotoQ cellphones and I am looking at an independant source evaluating the Bluetooth Headsets for best compatability.

I personally, have a Samsung A900 cellphone and purchsed a Jabra BT250v Bluetooth Headset and it works good only if in a quiet room and within 2 feet of the phone (without obstruction of any kind)! I have taken both to a couple Sprint technical service stores and they have told me that some Bluetooth Headset units work better than others depending on the phone. So there are obvious compatability issues with Bluetooth Units. Now Samsung says they will only support their Bluetooth Headsets and Jabara says their units will work with any phone. Both parties serving their own best interest (making a sale)! That is why I was looking for an independant source for information ... Consumer Reports where are you!!! This is a very big job and would require continuous maintenance due to new cell phones being made all the time! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, caveat emptor.

I work in the industry and have never found an independent site to evaluate various headsets. The best I have ever come up with is a Google or Yahoo search on headsets and read the reviews on any forum that has them. In these forums, you often find comments that don't help much, such as, "the earpiece doesn't fit my ear well" (So, how big or little is your ear) to those that are somewhat helpful, such as, "it works great" but doesn't say what phone they are using.

Apart from an absolute crap shoot on this, you can usually check for the Bluetooth version on the handset and compare it to the BT version on the headset. Of course, you have to make sure that BT on the handset does support the headset and/or hands free profile. Unfortunately, this is as good as it gets -- as far as I can find.

As to where JimR is located, I think the location on the blog: Indianapolis, IN, USA pretty well locates him.

I have to apologize for the location...I did add this after I received his comment as he was correct in asking for a location in order to help me. It was an oversite on my part! So thank you for your response.

The reference to Sprint was also a giveaway, but not everyone everywhere in the world realizes who they are and that their wireless network is in the US only.

I just wish there was an independent site/company that provided a comparison of wireless products and services. There are so many out there that it is easy for a customer -- individual or business -- to get confused on what is the best product, who is the best carrier, etc.

Heck, I work in the industry and I still haven't decided on which BT headset to get!

Why not do what everyone else does... Take your phone to the Sprint, T-Mobile, whatever store and ask, "Do you have a Bluetooth ear piece that will work with my phone?" They'll tell you in a second.
