SOHIC and PWHT

02/24/2015 12:30 AM

Do SOHIC prone piping (sour gas), require PWHT to get rid of/reduce the impact of it? There are restrictions provided for welded pipes to use in sour service without PWHT by some companies, but I don't know why there is no PWHT for girth welds if they need to reduce the impact of it. Can anybody please suggest on this

Your pipe supplier can.

What's the impact?

Take it from there.

Normal sour gas pipe requires a charpy test with the temperature given as to the area of the country/world the pipe will be located. We have had to test down to -50 degree F in many product pipe. Also HIC testing is required for sour gas piping.

I agree that SCC requirements shall be met before proceeding for SOHIC!! Do anybody think if a pipe is resistant to HIC, then also there are chances for SOHIC?

And here my query is about the PWHT requirements for mitigating SOHIC. Is there any such requirements or is there any experiences show that PWHT can diminute the SOHIC susceptibility? Or is there any experiences that PWHT is detrimental for SOHIC damage?

Yes PWHT is required for all welds in sour service

Please refer to API 571.

Also, according to NACE SP0472:

1.6.1.2 SOHIC can also occur in the services described above, but it does not require high strengths or high hardnesses. Hence, limiting weldment hardness does not prevent this form of cracking. Reducing weldment hardness and residual stress is believed to reduce the likelihood of this cracking, so the guidelinesin Sections 2 and 3 may still be helpful. However, additional steps, such as the use of special clean steels, water washing, corrosion inhibitors, or corrosion-resistant liners, may be needed for some services. An overview of the materials selection, fabrication, PWHT, and testing practices that have been applied to new pressure vessels for preventing SOHIC is in NACE Publication 8X194.

If your WPS meets NACE (Preheat and maximum interpass temperature, and NACE tested)and is impact tested to the minimum required temperature or lower temperature PWHT is not necessary if you are using Normalized material. Hardness test to verify NACE Hardness requirement HRC 22 or lower and it is good without PWHT. (When base metal thicknesses are under the thickness that the perspective code requires PWHT)
