Engines Aggregated Technical Data

02/25/2015 7:57 AM

Hi everyone!
I am trying to make a presentation concerning up to date internal combustion engines for different applications (light duty/passenger cars, heavy duty, marine/low rpm, aviation etc). I don't need any charts just sheer numbers of power, capacity, weight, engine dimensions, consumption(lt/h)/BSFC(g/kW). I tried to google them, but apart from the fact that the data I found were incomplete (e.g. I couldn't find engine weight and dimensions for passenger cars), it is also impossible to check every engine one by one (light duty applications alone may consist of hundreds of engines). So, I would be really grateful if someone could provide me with any source of information (books, technical papers, data bases etc.) that would have all these technical data aggregated (e.g. in the form of tables). Thank you in advance!

Good luck.

Google is the best source around.

I'm not inclined to do the work for you, so get started.

I don't rememper asking anyone do my job. The only thing I asked was to name a book or an address that you already know and perhaps use.

Few here have ever done a paper on the "sheer numbers of power, capacity, weight, engine dimensions, consumption(lt/h)/BSFC(g/kW) of light duty/passenger cars, heavy duty, marine/low rpm, aviation etc engines", so it's doubtful that anyone here can provide you with the source of your term paper/project/presentation/assignment from your boss, or whatever your motivation.

Such information would very likely be someone's work product and, as such, probably not be a public record.

Sorry, nothing here. Why would the weight be important one has to ask?

Thanks anyway IdeaSmith. I need the weight because power/weight ratio is a good indicator to compare different engines.

I am sure car manufacturer have this information available. it probably takes a few calls.

Asking for this ratio will be better than to ask for the weight.

Good luck!

Yeah I agree, but the problem is that it takes too long for big manufacturers to reply and sometimes they don't answer at all. Of course I will contact them but I don't have high expectations. Thanks again!

Re: Engines Aggragated Technical Data

I see your observation here as a symptom of a few possibilities. These possibilities are not mutually exclusive. I mean that any or all of these possibilities may be true at the same time.

  1. Every manufacturer may consider this information to be proprietary. As such, unless the manufacturer consider some of this data to be useful to sell their product, they will not release this information.
  2. The meaning of this information is convoluted and very application specific. Thus a manufacturer will not release this information to anyone but somebody qualified to understanding it. Particularly only to somebody qualified to incorporate one of these engines in their product thus again promoting a possible sale of the product.
  3. The constant redesigning of an engine for optimizing a particular attribute makes this type of a spreadsheet into a meaningless exercise that differentiates the PHB bean counters from engineers.
  4. You're laziness alarm has been triggered when you found what you thought would be a simple but dazzling collection of easy to find information is not already collected in one location.

I do not know why this information isn't easy to find in a convenient location for you. I suspect a mechanical engineer with a background in engine design would know why. I'm an electrical engineer. I see this will be about as useful as comparing processor speeds for playing Angry Birds.

I'm curious why bother to reply to a thread that is purely mechanical and therefore not your expertise. You can't even realize the reason behind this task, believing that is useless.

The real problem is that one cannot possibly know all the automotive, marine, aviation engines that are currently in the market. So, if you know of a list that contains just the names of all these engines it would be just as amazing. On the other hand, it would be meaningless to create a list containing names only. So, if a list like that existed, it would include every engine's technical data too.

Dear redfred, I won't comment on the numbered paragraphs you wrote, but let me tell you one more thing. You're an engineer so don't jump to conclusions, especially when concerning a field that you 're irrelevant with.

Sani11, welcome to CR4. You came here looking for someone to help you with your research, which most of us will try as long as it's not school homework. The information your skeeking is skirting the edges of homework. Even thou this is a world wide forum, we all pretty much watch out for each other, in other words, don't piss people off by being rude. You'll find people more willing to help if your civil.

Hi dj95401! I assure you that it's not school homework. The reason why I search for these data is to help me define the niche market of a product. You're right, I apologize for being rude. Despite the fact that redfred implied that I am lazy and my work is useless, I should have not lost my temper.

Because as an Engineer I quickly recognize pointless data collection that will obfuscate more than it informs. As an Electrical Engineer I have been employed to design and install instrumentation on various machines [including ICE] to quantify the parameters you wish to locate. The scope of the information you ask us to help you locate is so large that you obviously do not understand what you are trying to gather.

Just to give you a taste of the complexity of the information you've asked about, I will give you the names of three historic engines and ask the question of what vehicle these engines have in common?

  1. Rolls-Royce Kestrel VI
  2. Junkers Jumo 210
  3. Daimler-Benz DB 600

Happy Hunting

Ding, ding, ding!!! We have a winner. The BF 109 is the answer.

I doubt that Del, Kris or several other British CR4 members would be surprised but many a Brit would probably be surprised to find that this scourge of the British skies was briefly developed with a Rolls Royce engine.

Getting back to the question posed by the OP, just examining the wide variety of the no longer proprietary "factory standard" engines, let alone the field modifications, that happened during the decade of this great war should give at least a hint the absurdity of the question.

As your question has already been answered (I didn't realize that you asked for the exact type of aircraft so I would have answered that they were aircraft engines), I would like to ask you if you know a better way of defining a product's niche market. As I said above this is the reason why I need these data, so if you know a better way I'd appreciate it.

Re: Engines Aggregated Technical Data

The info. your looking for is not going to be readily available, it's going to take time and patience, and maybe even some foot work your part. Start by looking up replacement engines. You'll have to break down each engine family by manufacturer. Automotive parts stores and wrecking yards are a good source. With part stores, check out replacement engines, they'll list shipping weights and maybe dimensions. Wrecking yards will require actual foot work. With aircraft engines that information should be a lot easier to look up, but I would still look at replacement engines.

Good luck on your tasks!

Thank you very much all of you for your replies so far. However, it is obvious that I should have been more clear in my initial post. I never said that I will use the raw data directly in my presentation. I never said that I want to aquire something for free. Of course I will search in libraries and other places (as Tom Consulting and dj95401 said), but I have to start from somewhere and I thought asking for bibliography to be a good idea.

Redfred I apologise for being impolite.

Apology is not needed but gratefully accepted.

As for trying to figure out which niche for your engines, only the market itself will determine that. Some market research techniques can help identify which markets you can try to enter but marketeering and discussions on marketeering on an engineering blog will be dangerous.

I wish you luck.

You might have to do some field work mate.

Go to a breakers yard and ask them how heavy the engines are. For beer and a laugh they will let you play with their scales....

Want to know power figures then make (real) friends with those who tune engines for their ricebowl.

Social media can still be face to face.

You may get some information by going to the EAA Experimental Aircraft Association site and then checking out the auto conversion to aircraft use people. There has been a lot of info in the past on engine weight and power. Most of these operate using a reduction system ( belts, gears, cog belts etc.) to get the added rpm for horse power or KW with out over speeding the prop.

You might be surprised to find that you're sitting right in the middle of it, IHS (our gracious host) has a subsection called (you'll never guess) Combustion engines! Here's a sample page, the more you dig the more you find:

There is a small booklet I have used for years to determine the options available in the truck market. Look up Truck Index. They cover almost all of the engines available for US road trucks. Good luck.

Automotive engine specs can be found on sites like these:

http://www.powertrain.renault.com/ (Download the pdf files, which are not indexed by Google)

http://www.gmpowertrain.com/PowertrainOverview.aspx

https://www.volvopenta.com/volvopenta/industrial/en-gb/off_road_engines/engine_range_industrial/Pages/industrial_engines.aspx

There used to be the 'Japanese Engine Databook' for Japanese engines, but I don't think it is published anymore. But you might find a copy on eBay.
