Pipe Steam Speed

02/26/2015 7:17 AM

hi. i am solving for diameter using Q=AV .. i have a velocity with 6000-15000 ft/min range.. should i use average? maximum? or minimum? The formula would be D=sq root of (4Q/Vpi) .. then if i use maximum velocity the diameter would be smaller.

There's no way to answer without knowing the application. What is required of Q, average over time or peak?

Anon....

1) This is the first time you have done this, correct ?

2) You do understand that this formula is ONLY for saturated steam, right ??

3) This is not the only criteria in use for sizing steam piping. You must also consider the TOTAL pressure drop if the piping goes long distances (e.g. district heating systems. This TOTAL drop can cause you to select a larger pipe. You must also consider if your system includes control valves in modulating service. Selection of an excessively large pipe may make the system hard to control and cost too much.

4) Steam piping connecting to a steam turbine requires a completely different diameter calculation

Here is another steam piping reference, from another website ....... obviously from a wise and competent, elderly engineer.

Note that the velocity limits for saturated steam are 6000-10000 fpm.

Where did you get your limits from ?

Yes this is the 1st time. I have no idea how to start this. And yes, there are valves. I think stop valve and i dont know others yet.

I already have notes about pressure drop.

I have another question. Should I use the same material for my design? Because at 1st extraction the temp is 850F (alloy steel) and at 4th it is only 350F(carbon steel).

thanks you for help

Aim for Q/d to be 10m/s or so.

Good luck.
