A Map of all the Underwater Cables that Connect the Internet

03/13/2015 7:24 PM

An interesting piece of information about how much of the Internet data is carried from continent to continent around the world (except for Antarctica), and the cables that carry them: http://unbonmotgroundswell.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-map-of-all-underwater-cables-that.html

Very interesting.

To think that in today's world of satellite technology, buried cables do the bulk of data transmission.

All things being equal which has a lower latency; 26,200 miles x 2 + processing time, or 3,000 miles x 2? I've used satellite internet, 0.25 - 0.5 second round trip seemed like an eternity, 20 times greater than cable, and we're ignoring the satellite's lower bandwidth.

Yeah, satellite connections make each party think the other is a bit slow, mentally, because of the delay.
