How Long do your Batteries Last?

Posted September 13, 2009 7:50 AM

Can you go a full day without having to recharge your cell phone? A variety of available applications are creating a growing need for additional power in multifunctional mobile phones. One California-based company has now developed strips of organic thin film solar plastic that are capable of boosting cellular battery life. The solar strips can be attached to the backs of cell phones. Although the panels suffer from short lifetime, their affordability will likely render them appealing to consumers. What battery technology do you think will be able to efficiently support 4G and 5G cellular wireless broadband?

I am pleasantly astonished at the original (BR50) 3.7v Li ion battery in my dinosaur of a RAZR phone... over 3 years old and still going strong!

Having a military-mindset ~ "IROANS" (Inspect & Repair Only As Necessary for Service , or: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!") ~ I cannot bring myself to 'upgrade' just yet.

Somewhere else on GlobalSpec/CR4 are links to THIS (30-yr battery) article, which technology I look forward to seeing one day. Could such batteries be made small enough for mini-wrist-band cell phones, a-la Dick Tracy...?

There are crank-type chargers for flashlights, radios, and for the laptops sent to "3rd-world" schools, etc... how small could that particular technology be shrunk (wind-charge your phone unnoticed while riding the elevator?).

I *do* like the solar-strip idea. My phone could be charging right now, lying on my desk next to my solar powered calculator (which works off the fluorescent room lighting)!

I recharge my phone perhaps once or twice a week.
