Imaging System Peeks Inside Closed Books

Posted October 06, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Though reading closed books may sound like a story from a fiction, researchers have developed technology to make it a reality. Using Terahertz (THz) radiation, a team of scientists from MIT has developed an imaging system that can create images of individual pages inside a closed book. Designed by MIT Media Lab researchers under the supervision of research scientist Barmak Heshmat, the system uses a THz camera with built-in receiver sensor. The camera emits ultrashort bursts of radiation and the sensor detects reflections from the book to create images of the stacked pages.

I cannot think of a better example of the phrase "a solution looking for a problem".

I think that is where the expression "academic exercise" comes in. But in all fairness, there are a lot of cases where someone will find an unanticipated good use for an otherwise dubious looking solution.
