In the awake of the aborted Christmas day terrorist incident on a Northwest flight, authorities are weighing an array of technologies to detect explosives and weapons during security checks. Leading contenders include full-body backscatter and millimeter wave (see video) technologies. Both can detect metallic and non-metallic objects, such as guns and knives, plastic and liquid explosives, and composite weapons. For privacy, passenger faces are blurred as TSA agents view body images on security screens.
