Self-Draining, Self-Regulating Fuel Cells

Posted February 09, 2007 6:00 AM
Pathfinder Tags: hydrogen recycling

Princeton University researchers are developing a self-draining, self-regulating fuel cell. The closed system relies on its waste water to control the flow of hydrogen. The water, which is stored in a tank, is used to maintain the cell membrane so that recycling of unused hydrogen is not necessary.

The problems of using variable water levels to control the effective reaction area inside the cell is not in my opinion, viable in a mobile system where the accelerations involved would cause the water to move around inside the cell. Additionally there is the problem of potential freezing when you are storing pure water.

It may well have good applications in stationary installations, but fuel cells have a long way to go before they become economic for mainstream use, and then there is the problem of where you get the hydrogen from, how do you store it and how much does it cost.
