Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Cool Cop Cars: 1973 AMC Matador

Posted February 19, 2010 12:01 AM by dstrohl

Finding a complete AMC Matador is a rarity. Finding a real Z-code 401 police package 4-door is something special. Finding one that is an actual LAPD fleet vehicle is like finding a needle in the haystack!

But this is an authentic LAPD Matador "Enforcer" (shop #83986) with a legendary 401 coupled to a 727 automatic. PS, PFDB, HD suspension. Original equipment included: T-2 can lights; 5-channel Motorola Motrac 70 with SIMUL feature; Federal siren with "Alert" feature; correct LAPD "Hot Sheet Desk" with Roster gooseneck light.

Brings back memories for me of High School in San Jose, CA, when they retired the CHP Polaras and brought these in. And driving a 4-door, 390, 4-BBL Javelin in Driver's Ed. Smoked em every time we had em, for three of the most fun weeks I can remember. White haired DE instructors, too!
