Is Green Power Creating Jobs?

Posted March 01, 2010 7:08 AM

News reports and speeches from politicians say that many "Green Jobs" will result from new energy policies, from efforts to develop renewable power sources, and from rebuilding the national electric distribution system into a Smart Grid. Do you think the Smart Grid and renewable power will create new jobs? Have you seen any evidence in your company or your town?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Power Generation & Distribution, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Power Generation & Distribution today.

Whether true signs on green power and smart grid are realized or not, one thing is sure that our whole future rely on green power technologies and electricity replacing fossil fuels.

It is all about how realistically we develop and exploit green technologies.

When such adaptations come in -the jobs, product and technology market should be astonishingly scopeful.

Just wait for the trigger

I am a photovoltaic instructor in Los Angeles. Green jobs are being created. Certain jobs are just old industries greening up. No new jobs but new green jobs out of existing jobs.

There is some true new job creation but its going at a crawl. check out Solar City or Sunpower. They are growing!!! Many more than that. Just enough for the industry but not enough to save our economy.

We had a biogas plant that was supposed to be built here in Texas. Called Mustang Creek. The field is still empty after two years. Sign is gone and nothing there but some hay covered up. From what I have heard. The EPA and Gov regulations killed the plant. So much for going green.

I have devised a method of storing energy from intermittent generation using old tyres (or tires in US speak).

These are formed into tyre cylinders and pulled below water by the spare energy, to generate from these they are allowed to rise and turn the generator.

Should this come to fruition there will be plenty of jobs. Collecting tyres, checking and testing tyres, forming the cylinders, installing sea anchors and equipment.

If anyone would like to get this off the ground they are welcome.

No, not yet for us, but we are in development and planning and fully intend to.

The European model for green jobs is failing.

There are NEW green jobs being created but they are in established industries such as recycling and insulation industries. Most of the jobs are in response to higher energy costs. Fledgeling solar and wind companies are being formed but the consumer demand is not there yet, although interest is growing daily.

I would have to say this pot is cooking it is still a ways from boiling.

We are working with fuel cell technology, so yes, at least our company emerged from "going greener".
