Are You Ready for Remanufacturing?

Posted March 17, 2010 7:34 AM

Demand for remanufactured or reprocessed devices in the health care industry is growing as a way to deal with tough economics and to optimize the use of scarce hospital resources. There are environmental benefits as well. Has remanufacturing emerged as factor in your operations or industry? Would it make economic sense?

Class i isn't scary. Class ii isn't on first glance, but has more potential;

REmanufacturing and reprocessing is becoming am ajor issue in military as the companies that originally made many components have disappeared as have their engineering records. RIT has a major program devoted to this.

The smart move for the device manufacturers would be to open a reprocessing branch, supply reprocessing services, have remanufacturing in mind when the device is designed, and catch that market. At least it would minimize their loss.

I think it's a very good thing, for remanufacturing to become a standard hospital asset - think about those countries where devices are reused because of scarcity, sometimes at great risk. I would hope or expect that the remanufacturing process is more destructive of pathogens than attempts at sterilizing used equipment..
