Jobs Go Begging

Unemployment is a huge challenge for the U.S.; yet at the same time that millions of people are looking for work, there are jobs out there going begging because candidates don't have the requisite skills. Are there jobs in your operations going unfilled? Are more training and education programs required?

1. I would like to see the actual data that declares how many unfilled jobs that there are.

2. I would like to see the study that tells what type of jobs they are, too.

That will substantially help in answering the questions posed by the original poster. Until you have some real data it is useless to speculate and even more ridiculous to act.

In the open market place of mutual needs, the offerer has to cry and sell to make his business keep going. Calls for candidates vis Ads and sending resumes to calls are just essential steps. When there are demand Vs supply mismatchings taking place ,then comes the stress. It is not the process of begging, rather the process of offering to put it in a dignified way. Life is like that and it's all a part. keep knocking and doors of opportunities and that is the best way. No gains without Pains.

Yeah, good help is hard to find, especially if good salaries/bennies/perks are not offered. Is this supposed to be a mystery? Other than to easily mystified persons like bean-counters, that is.

Not to put too fine a point on it but for a bean counter to be mystified, they would have to have curiousity.

Not really meaning to semantically quibble, but i believe you are dramatically overstating the bean counters' abilities.

I always thought it was just bureaucratic ignorance and obedience on the part of the beanies.

Loved this comment Milo.

I wonder if there will be enough skilled people left for the new seamless mill in Youngstown, OH, or the expansions USS plans at Lorain and a couple of other plants.

Are there jobs begging because applicants have no skills, yes, welders, fitters, and others in the metal trades, the electrical shops don't seem to be so needful at this time.

Skilled people will be recruited from wherever they are.

There may be a few craft guys within a drive to Lorain, but Y-town ---No way.

Not much sympathy for companies that treat talent like disposable wrappers, use then throw away.

I had an contract with BP a couple of years ago at Lorain for some 135 KSI GOM Casing. Finding inspectors was extremely difficult and I wonder if it has changed all that much. A lot of hands have retired since then also, but I hear they are looking to expand and hire. The culture at USS Tubulars seems to be coming more quality conscious. I am sure you know Lorain's Level III, Dan, who I hear is being even more proactive. Y-town, yes, I do agree, at North Star, when Cargill owned the mill several years back, the work force was slim then and with the Campbell Works long gone, I imagine, all of the old skills have been lost.

How is small bore tubing doing?

If you guys want to see the stats first? Go to http://www.plantservices.com/skilltv/ Joel mentions and leads you to a lot of statistics backing up the skill shortage in the USA. He also brings attention to how it is going to get exponentially worse for companies to find skilled workers.

Tip: To those trying to fill the skilled worker position, get added current real-world training to add to your resumes. So you can talk the talk and walk the walk, while showing your future employer you continually improve yourself and update your skill set. When potential employees better sale them selves to potential employers, employers don't have to go begging so much.

Here is a good example of one of Joel's interviews with an employer, that is right on topic with this discussion ...
