Are Bailouts Sensible?

Posted March 09, 2010 7:55 AM

We hear so much news about financial bailouts: banks, companies, and now entire countries. If a son or daughter behaves foolishly with money, it's acceptable for a parent to step in to help. But when professional adults behave stupidly — even immorally — with other people's money and valuable resources, do they deserve to be rescued? Are they really "too big and important" to fail? Or should they be fired and their enterprise, whatever it is, allowed to go into default?

Bailing out the megabanks occurs because of insider connections, and nothing else. It is no coincidence that the Treasury Dept. is and has been in the past headed by and had others on staff who came from Goldman Sachs. This has been that way for some time, and any legislation that is supposed to stifle this always exempts them or fails to pass.
