Are Models Always Reality?

Posted May 15, 2010 2:18 PM

In today's world, models are used to help us grasp difficult concepts. In engineering, computer models such as finite element analysis work very well to test prototypes of new concepts and products. However, computer models can have a darker side. Financial models have led to massive over-leveraging that has brought the banking world to its knees, and weather models brought all European air traffic to a halt for nearly a week. Does the public understand what models are, and do they understand the risks in dogmatically following them?

The models think that they are reality, but they're not. We aren't able to model and account for all variables in the real world. It's important that people understand that, and use models only as one tool on the road to development.

The general public, and most non-technical businessmen, do not understand it. In their quest for fast profits they take every shortcut they can find. There have been many failed projects, and wasted time and dollars, because people chose to dogmatically follow models and skip physical prototyping. While those people deserve what happened, it unfairly discredits modeling too.
