Lessons from Deep Water Horizon

Posted May 20, 2010 10:07 AM

The environmental disaster that followed the blowout of the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico produced enough questions for a thousand blogs. The topics are almost endless. Should the blowout put a halt to offshore drilling, or trigger tougher government regulations? Should it spawn a greater commitment to alternative energy? Is it time for a major revival of nuclear technology? And what about the design of offshore rigs? What changes are needed to prevent or cap blowouts? How do you rate the performance of remotely-controlled subs and other technologies mobilized to mitigate ecological damages from the blowout?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Design & Analysis Software, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Design & Analysis Software today.

"Should the blowout put a halt to offshore drilling, or trigger tougher government regulations?"

Tougher government regulations, by which government?

Does not offshore oil drilling take place at several locations around the world? Russia, China... Will regulations made by this new US government agency have any gas in other parts of the world?

Does British Petroleum follow the regulations set forth by Russia, when in the Gulf of Mexico? Why does Mexico not have a say... or, do they? It seems to me they certainly have a dog in this fight. How about Cuba?
