Designing the Car of the Future

Posted July 04, 2010 8:08 AM

Having survived a devastating recession, the auto industry is now racing to pinpoint what consumers want in tomorrow's cars, studying such factors as technical advances, changing behavior, and cultural trends. Should the auto be a mobile office, an entertainment center, or a flexible cargo platform for outdoor enthusiasts? Those questions are driving such innovations as MyFord Touch, which connects a raft of media options, and BMW's Teleservice, for monitoring and predicting maintenance needs. Which new ideas do you see as essential? And which are frivolous?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Design & Analysis Software, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Design & Analysis Software today.

to pinpoint what consumers want .

Ah but that's the rub...what a customer wants, needs, thinks they want, thinks they need, what they tell you and would actually buy have no relationship to each other what so ever. That's why they have advertising...to convince the customer that they actually want the crap that some moronic marketing man specified 4 years ago.

I mean people think they want all sorts of electronic gizmos...until the car won't let them lock the doors because it thinks they havn't switched off the ignition because some irrelevant sensor contact has got a bit of condensation on it.

Everyone has their own personal list of items they want on their next auto. Most will opt for fuel economy as #one, followed with style, comfort, power and reliability. I don't feel the thinking public really wants or needs such items as automatic braking, TV screens front and back or various gimmicks that don't add much to function but add to price. There is a certain percentage of the car buying public that sees diy car repair as an important thing. I agree with this. It can be quite costly to have repairs done by a dealer because the diy person doesn't have the special tools or diagnostic equipment. This option you won't see, no matter how many people want it. It just doesn't generate enough profit for the company. Many people buy a new car and are shocked to find out the recommended service charge will cost them over $1000. If they knew this beforehand, they might reconsider a different brand. It's something car dealers "forget" to tell you. Bells and whistles add cost to a cars price tag. The big three will consider all the ideas and pick the ones that are most popular but also those that return the biggest profit (bang-for-the-buck) for the company. Reducing costs is not easy, but increasing costs to maximize profits is good business. You may see the car of your dreams some day, but be prepared to pay for it.

No one has ever bothered to ask me what I want in an automobile. The last automobile that came close to what I think I want in an automobile was built some time in the 1970's. I have not owned an automobile since the early 1990's, because no one wants to make what I want. But, then, back when I did own automobiles, I tended to buy used and drive them for 10 years or more...

And yes, DIY repair was important to me- not to save money, but because I enjoyed it...

I have never been able to find any vehicle that had 100% of what I want. Some of my wants could be found in some cars, but never 100% in one car. I would have to have two or more cars, but purpose would be defeated.

as varied as people are, "pinpointing" what consumers want in cars will be next to impossible. what is possible, however, is identifying what people want in their car.

with the increase of knowledge and coupled with the shortening of the days, people will find themselves swamped with "TO DOs" more and more. driven by the constant urge for "recreation" and the unstoppable impulse to possess more and more kits and gadgets, there will be cars that will serve as office, entertainment center and cargo platforms - not in one vehicle, of course.

the car as an extension of the office. - because it is impossible to read eMail while driving, cars will be developed that will auto-navigate itself to your destination. equipped with GPS and highly-developed sensors, the driver, I mean, rider, may now swivel his chair sidewards to face his desk, slide open his computer, connect to the Internet and prepare for the meeting which is coming up in 2 hours. he eMails the presentation material to his official mailbox, and because he still has 20 minutes before arrival, opens his favorite online newspaper for the daily news.

the car as an entertainment center.- also since watching a BlueRay movie while driving is very dangerous, the car will necessarily also have to be auto-navigating. now, the rider can recline his seat to a very comfortable position while watching the movie he didn't finish during his last ride. such vehicles are equipped with surround-sound acoustics and 3D screen. he arrives at the office fully refreshed and ready for work.

the car as a cargo platform.- there's no other place to put his toys at home, the car is the next choice. of course, there's more room for the camping gear, the fishing gear, and even a bicycle. this car, while immense, will certainly not sacrifice style or handling, thus will still be a pleasure to drive.

now I have to shake myself awake from this dream.

Having been rescued by tax dollars from the intro of a devastating recession hold on tight for round two...we're not out of the woods yet.

As side from that lets look towards delveloping a CNG distribution infrastructure and lead the way into the next economic rally. As you may recall Henry didn't just build a car he engineered an industry.

The car of the future will be a moving sidewalk.

For a good story on this, search out Robert Heinlein's "The Roads Must Roll."

Having survived a devastating recession,

Survived?, Recession over?....says who, if they turned around this fast from the last bailout, it can easily revert back to the verge of bankruptcies and more government bailouts. This recession is not over, and the car company's are not totally out in the clear.

What they did to repay the loans (along with the bailout) was short term fixes, the problem and committments are still there, and when its time to pay the piper, it wouldn't be looking so cheery.

A car is just an ass hauler. The sooner we all realize that it is just a machine with one purpose, that is to haul your ass from point A to point B and back, the sooner we all start to get affordable cars that are reliable and economical.

I think I agree with this in large measure. Although, I do enjoy a good sound system for long trips.
