Practical Solutions for Cleaning the Gulf

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is one of the worst environmental disasters in recent years. BP is working to solve the problem, proposing numerous solutions for addressing the oil leak and improving clean up efforts. What recommendations would you make to BP to clean up the current oil spill? Are there new technologies that would work?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Chemical Manufacturing, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Chemical Manufacturing today.

My modest suggestion is to put to work few big freigth carriers with some kind of vacumm cleaner wide long (200' to 300'Ft.) up front the ship which will be sucking rigth up the contaminated water surface into a banks of 'Water/Oil Separators Units' onboard which will be reciclying the cleaned water back to ocean.

Now to gradually stop oil leakeage down under I'd suggested an 'Stainless/Steel Screen Mesh' positioned atop or wrapp around leaking pipeline (s) and brace-up with strongs earth magnets blocks all over in order to have enougth base to keep on building a heavy cluster of dry coconut fibers in junction with soft metals alloys for reinforcing such specialty made off clustering to heal such bleeding in stages. And, it will be possible to install a relief valve opening for further operation of this well eventually.

Allset, let me know how this sound and any other advicement will be welcome too, why not? You got the Technology!

Crank that Puppy-Up,

MC

Freight carriers larger than tankers? Where do we get them? A vacuum 2-300' wide is a drop in a bucket and how do you settle the separators quickly enough to pump uncontaminated water back as you suck up the oil? What kind of rare earth magnets stick to stainless steel?

You do have a point with the fibrous clusters but not to stop the leak.

I may be wrong but did they even explain where and from what the leak is coming. If it is a shift in the crust than it will not stop. If it is a pipe break, perhaps a pointed dowel and a pile driver - if they can get close enough. otherwise try blowing the sucker up again with a greater charge.

IF MAYBE PERHAPS YOU CAN FREEZE THE OIL ...BUT THE TASK CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS....

How and/or why would you freeze it? The solution is simple and proven for the last 150 years... Straw & hay & peat absorbs oil into their fibers, locking them in. All the surface oil can be cleaned in a matter of weeks.

K.I.S.S. come on, just Keep It Simple! Drop several hays and straws along with some peat moss over the area, let the waves do their magic mixing the brew and scoop it out with fishing nets. Set it aside until it dries then stuff it into a coal fired power plant for energy. It too bad that this happened but that is part of the problem with carbon based fuels - they're messy and sometimes hard to clean. That is the cost all of us have to pay as we each drive our own cars and live in 3 - 8 bedroom homes. Do Not Blame BP when it is all our fault.

We do not need any new solutions, we already have the technology from well over the last 150 years - they just have to use it and stop with the excuses and political BS.
