Podcast: Medicine and Hoopla

Posted August 04, 2010 7:25 AM

The Web makes it hard to sort cutting-edge medicine from high-tech snake oil. National Public Radio's Morning Edition recently debunked a number of stem cell therapies marketed to consumers via the Internet. A U.S. Government Accountability Office report found that genetic testing varied so widely as to provide useless results. Yet, a large study showed that a vaginal gel stops transmission of HIV during intercourse. How can one sort the medicine from the hoopla? Should governing bodies intervene, or is it a case of global "buyer beware"?

An advertisement on TV showing a healthy middle age man with a beautiful woman:

"If you can't get it up, ask your doctor about Distencia. Common side effects include paralysis, coma, and slow painful death, If you experience an erection lasting more than four hours, seek immediate professional help. If you experience a sudden loss of sight, stop jerking off."
