Which Design News Media Do You Peruse?

Posted August 10, 2010 7:35 AM

As a medical device designer, where do you turn for work-related information? According to a recent survey of 4,000 professionals in Asia, Europe, and North America, traditional and e-media sources are heavily used. Supplier/vendor Websites also seem to be a rich source for information for medical device professionals, especially product-specific data. How much do you rely on search engines, print publications, digital media, or other sources?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Medical Equipment Design, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Medical Equipment Design today.

Haven't "use"d one in a while... so per-use; not recently.

All kidding aside, I have worked in electronics in different roles over 38 years. In the middle part of my career I played the role of Production Engineer as well as In-House Service Engineer. I subscribed to a lot of trade magazines. It helped me keep abreast of the latest technologies and parts, but even then, it's not like I referred to them enough to make it worth all the trees that were cut down for them. I think it's much better to have these types of publications available electronically. I threw away a lot but I still have a lot of my paper trade magazines. Tried to give them away in many places but nobody seems to want them. Some of the information is still relevant and I can't bear to think they should be considered "trash". Even the online versions of these magazines go back only so far -- and not as far back as my issues. I also used to clip and save articles to save storage space. This is why electronic versions are so much better. Just make sure you back up whatever is most important to you.

As P.S. - the downside to all the information available electronically is that there is way more than any one person can absorb. It can lead to information anxiety if one doesn't remind oneself of the futility of trying to know everything. I get a number of the U2 online "newsletters". As of today, that folder where I store them (because information is valuable to me) shows 350 unread newsletters. A good example of how it can be hard to keep up when information comes in daily now rather than weekly, as most trade journals used to.
