Does Wall Street Help or Hinder Nanotech?

Posted October 05, 2010 7:56 AM

Nanotechnology made it onto the Wall Street radar by virtue of its potential. Venture capital funds, indexes, stock advice… everybody in the investment world is looking to make big bucks off of the market sector. That's good for them, but is it actually counterproductive for the technology if start-ups are being pressured to go public before their time or if public companies are being pushed to make bad development decisions in order to satisfy shareholders?

This sound like a rerun of last decade's dot.com bubble. The silicone valley venture capitalists had some smarts and made enough good bets to get things going, but the less savvy wall street crowd rushed in and wrecked the market. The problem is that when you concentrate wealth you by definition create a class of people with more money than brains. But what the heck...the economy is in the toilet. A big nano-tech bubble might make it appear that we have a functioning economy again, at least for a while.

No doubt John, just look at the "big" pharmaceutical companies ruining the health industry and our lives for speculative profits and with risky medical effects; or the oil industry holding back progres for profit with devastating economical effects. But what the heck...when most of the politicians are trading "legally" on inside information, do you think the Wall Street will focus on the scientific goals or launch into superoptimistic forward statements for financial gain? Deffinitely if money is the end product, there will be ethic violations and crime associated with the Wall Street's interraction. Detrimental to the scientific Nanotech world and economy, no doubt about it.

That is why medical tourism is increasing rapidly. I prefer to go to Canada, Europe or Asia instead of getting blackmailed by Big Pharma, FDA and other Healthcare crooks
