How Well Do You Work and Play with Others?

Posted October 23, 2010 7:51 AM

Building effective project teams requires assembling people with diverse skills and conflicting opinions. Yet somehow those differences must be synthesized into an effective result. An unchallenged consensus would forego consideration of alternate — and possibly superior — problem-solving approaches. What role do you play on your team? Are you a leader? A peacemaker? Do you try to insert alternate points of view to widen the discussion? What types of team dynamics work best for you? What would your coworkers say if you asked them that question?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Test & Measurement, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Test & Measurement today.

Ensure the problem or the project is within your capacity of handling and solving.

Select interested or capable team players.

Re educate, refresh, do literature survey or bring in imported expertize by way of external consultations.

Define the problem, expected targets, put forward all facts and parameters and go for a factor based scientific procedure.

Allow people to try or work as per guidelines, time targets to gain some pre hand experience.

For good leaders the following actions are detrimental to progress{Don'ts]

*Too much of faith on people, lack of participation and supervision.

*Half hearted suggestions with deep thinking.

* Lack of participation at critical activities

*blaming later.

Do's- periodic review meetings, good follow up and involvement, patting and motivation, accepting total responsibility and finally exemplary DEDICATION backed by optimism the key caliber for success. periodically appreciate good deeds with tips for improvement. Appreciation is a magic tool.

No gains without pains.

Hi Dan,

I have to read twice to catch everything and I want to revise and make some modifications before I try to apply your principles. Don't be shocked. Everyone makes some errors time to time because we are not perfect. So, we can learn.

If I have the capacity to handle and solve, I don't need people around me. Am I egoist? Possible but for sure knowledgeable about the project.

I explain the project to many and select up to 5 to 6 people who want to work with me on that project.

Many brains cannot be "re-educated". I prefer attitude and motivation as human quality.

Yes, the "project" is defined and we must have a good idea about the final requirement. The solution could be made simply, without any "factor based scientific procedure". The world like to complicate. I am the opposite, I simplify all the time.

Never limit actions (Its their strengths) of the participants. When someone is totally off, let know and redirect.

People are your selection for the project, and you are the judge and resposible that they are knowledgeable about the project. Have regularly a meeting to resume the progress of the project. Distribute the written meeting resume as soon as possible.

What you want to mean and tell with: "Half hearted suggestions with deep thinking." Attitude and knowledge are the functional engines for the success of the project.

The good leader control everything because she/he is responsible for the final result.

When I am responsible for something, I don't transfer to someone else, never.

When you put together a team for a project, only you are "the responsible" and can be "blamed".

There is no "magic", there are results with positive or negative finalities.

It's true: "No gains without pains".

Did you already were as a project leader? If yes, let us know with the final results.

Wish more simplicity in your thinking and more positive in your actions, Gil.

Refer to your statement,"

Certainly not English composition and spelling!"

This is not a forum for English composition and spelling.

If you can't comment, please refrain from making redundant statements like a half-grown up teenager.

Sorry, forgot that we are supposed to sort through rambling thoughts/spelling and remain appreciative of words of 'wisdom'.

I am positive I have ran far larger projects than most people around and under difficult conditions - completed on schedule and with better than expected results.

As for your teenager remark - there would be many suggestions I could make but will refrain as it would get my hand slapped.

Best Regards,

Russ

Thank you guest for the kind review and valuable comments. I suppose it is Gil Becker after so much gap in CR4. How are you Sir?

My Project views are based on working with younger students who are given the serious project tasks and treated with confidence. I had been reasonably successful to the extent of 80 to 85%. We take up serious tasks related to sustainable development, learning new things every year.

When coming to my personal research activities, I accomplish very complex tasks with external fabricators, only tolerance is to allow some damages and reworks. It pays well later.Low cost simulation is the basis of my work.

" Half hearted suggestions without deep thinking' is the correction statement as you have rightly mentioned, my apologies for the hasty typing.

Thank you for joining me in this thread. Cheers
