Images: The Cocoa Beach Air Show

Posted November 09, 2010 10:00 AM by Steve Melito

Florida's Space Coast provided visitors with their fill of aerodynamic tricks and treats during the recent Halloween weekend. On October 30 and 31, the Brevard County community of Cocoa Beach hosted an amazing air show headlined by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. The party began with a Friday night preview, when the U.S. Navy Seals Leap Frogs parachuted in from the ocean.

Air, Sea and Space Week 2010 also included military aircraft demonstrations of the F-15 Strike Eagle, the C-17 Globemaster III, and the F-18 Hornet. On Saturday and Sunday, beachfront audiences were treated to tricks by military jet pilots, parachute jumpers, fling formation teams, and civilian aerobatic performers. The 920th Rescue Wing from Patrick Air Force Base also demonstrated its considerable capabilities.

Thanks to Joby Minor, a wonderful photographer who works for NASA in Huntsville, CR4 has permission to bring you these images of the Cocoa Beach Air Show. (All photos courtesy of Joby Minor – copyright 2009). Here are a few.

Thanks for posting this! I was too busy to get there, even though it is less than 50 minutes away, but happy to see all the pictures. Nice work!

Let me tell you. We played at the air show in Schenectady NY in the 1970's. At first it was a blast watching all the planes. Being on a flat bed tractor trailer somewhat in the field in front of the people almost on the air field all was well until 2 F17 fighters passed 20 feet above out heads doing some manuver where they came at each other then flipped and were inches apart as they passed over head at 550MPH while we were playing at about 20 feet over our heads was scary. (You could see the rivits as they passed over) I was much younger then. You felt their air wash and the thrust and heat. That was it for me and air shows.

I got out of there as soon as the rodies packed up my gear. And have not been to an air show since. And never again. They were just way too close for me. Don't misunderstand. I love flying as, long as I am at the controls. That was just too close for me. Now that I am thinking about that day, I can still feel the heat and wash like it was yesterday. And things do and have gone wrong badly and fast.

I loved the shots, they are awsome. From a distance!!

Things have changed a lot since the '70's. After numerous crashes and many injured spectators in shows around the world, they (at least here in the US) have implemented many rules designed to minimize the carnage should an accident occur. Things like: greater separation from spectator areas, flight vectors that would not result in pieces and parts landing in the spectator areas should a collision occur, etc.

You can't count the rivets anymore. Bummer (IMO)

I watched from the third floor of the condo and the Jets screamed by at the same level off the Ocean as we were...wow! See into the cockpit displays... Great Air show and the Thunderbirds practiced for several days giving us residents of the area lots of opportunities to see them.

Nice to see rescue crews.

I really love rescue crews and the way they perform operations.

Specially rope rescue, either by helicopter or high/low angle.

These pics are really nice.
