Waging War for Talent

Posted December 12, 2010 7:00 AM

Navigating turbulent economic waters can be difficult for laboratory managers, as they cope with employee shortages, low morale, and an aging staff yearning for retirement. Such factors have led to what some experts have dubbed "scientific talent wars." Lab Manager magazine describes how laboratories are wooing talent, as well as ideas for retaining workers. Arming yourself with this information will give your lab the edge in the continuing battle for talented employees.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Lab Equipment, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Lab Equipment today.

Alas, if only this were true...

If there is a "scientific talent war", it is completely invisible so far as I have seen. Nonetheless, lots of scientific non-talent seems to fare quite well.

So I read the article in the link and the first question that comes to my mind is just what kind of laboratory are we talking about? There is a world of difference between a research laboratory and one that does routine clinical medical testing.

Train the bosses in the latest management fads (some may be useful) and the Zen of leadership; Blah, Blah ..........

Sure there is a shortage of job candidates with the insecurity and adaptability of a 55 year old, the experience and talent of a 45 year old, the work ethic and ambition of a 35 year old, and the salary requirements, health and energy of a 25 years old. Oh yes; twice the education credits that the job really requires and 10 years of specific job experience preferably working for your competitor.

Time to get real. There are plenty of high caliber unemployed people out there. Tens of thousands of scientifically trained and technically experienced people from backgrounds you probably know little about. Or people who just have a good work experience, the intellect to learn a routine lab job and some real personal integrity.

It's time, Mr. Lab Manager, for you to escape from your preconceived notions about ideal employees and start building your team. The San Francisco Giants won the World Series with a mediocre team of players. How did they do that?

Perhaps you need to start thinking about your own championship race and stop crying because the line of perfect job applicants at your door is a bit short.

If you have shortage of scientists then easier solution will be to import from developing countries. There are many talented scientists who would be glad to work abroad. But U.S immigration policy have put on restriction on H-1B visas.

Employers in North America need to step up to the plate. For years they have been aware of the aging work force at their facilities and have done very little to nothing about training their replacements. There are plenty of talented, trainable people here that are unemployed.

Hi Roy,

Absolutely right! We have young talented people around here but we need some patience and teaching what we want from the new arrived.

If we want to replace olders, we have to transfer their experiences to the youngs and let new energy and ideas to flow. Wacky companies with decentralized control and flattened organization, which are innovative and progressive, let the new individual, talent, and ideas for exploitation. Let them think about the established business and do changes.

When I was manager, every week I imposed to me the responsibility to ask each worker, each week what she/he think about what and how we do things at the shop. Profitable suggestions were rewarded. It should be that way everywhere with new and old staff. Lean production, six sigma, and other production concerns must be corrected by the workers because they know better than anyone what and how to do production, isn't it? However, you can help! Profits come from being faster, cheaper, and better than before and the competition.

If you are in very competitive business, everyone does the job well. If you are in a niche business, you have to teach what and how to do things in your place. If my suggestion is true, do it immediately for a more profitable business, Gil.
