Searching for Pipeline Perfection

Posted December 14, 2010 7:00 AM

Can pipelines be made entirely safe? That's the $64 question as the NTSB looks into the San Bruno accident. In fairness to PG&E, that pipeline was directly inspected for internal corrosion in November 2009. Leak detection analysis in March 2009 and a year later in 2010 also found nothing to indicate any problems. On the other hand, Embridge shortened several pipeline inspection intervals from 30 months to six, and uncovered potential defects as a result. Is increased inspection the answer, or should we be focusing on newer materials and massive replacement?
