Recently, 26-year old Belinda Reid of Adelaide Australia was
named Australia's top apprentice technician working on forklift trucks. She won
the Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) Apprentice Skills Contest, which
is designed to keep forklift technicians ahead of industry standards. As part
of the THMA National Skills Contest, apprentice participants take two forklift
theory tests, followed by one day of six practical tests.
Reid is a former au pair and nanny who initially wanted to
be an auto mechanic, but joined Toyota Material Handling in South Australia in
2007 as the first female adult apprentice. From the beginning, Ried found that
she enjoyed working with forklifts, and eventually decided that she no longer
wanted to work on cars.
