Although over 50 countries have banned the use of asbestos,
a natural mineral that can be used for rooftops, pipes, and in other building
materials, a new report finds that the Canadian government regularly exports
the material to poorer countries.
This practice is being heavily criticized by medical journal
Lancet, who says it's hypocritical. Other Canadian organizations have also denounced
exporting asbestos, including: the Quebec Medical Association, Canadian Cancer
Society, and the Canadian Medical Association.
The Canadian Minster of Natural Resources says that handling
of asbestos has a sound scientific basis, even though they reportedly spent
millions of dollars removing the material from buildings across the country,
including Parliament.
The World Health Organization has made claims linking the
material to cancer. According to an article in The
Boston Globe, about 100,000 people die each year from asbestos-related
diseases, and approximately 125 million continue to be exposed to it worldwide.
Do you think exporting asbestos should be banned?
