Canadian Government Attacked for Asbestos Exports

Posted December 09, 2010 2:49 PM by Sharkles

Although over 50 countries have banned the use of asbestos, a natural mineral that can be used for rooftops, pipes, and in other building materials, a new report finds that the Canadian government regularly exports the material to poorer countries.

This practice is being heavily criticized by medical journal Lancet, who says it's hypocritical. Other Canadian organizations have also denounced exporting asbestos, including: the Quebec Medical Association, Canadian Cancer Society, and the Canadian Medical Association.

The Canadian Minster of Natural Resources says that handling of asbestos has a sound scientific basis, even though they reportedly spent millions of dollars removing the material from buildings across the country, including Parliament.

The World Health Organization has made claims linking the material to cancer. According to an article in The Boston Globe, about 100,000 people die each year from asbestos-related diseases, and approximately 125 million continue to be exposed to it worldwide.

Do you think exporting asbestos should be banned?

Answer? Legalize asbestos for everybody! The ban is based on the hazards of occupational exposure to asbestos in processing plants, which has nothing to do with you or me. This is just one more meritorious, useful substance that only the poor can now have. Et moi, alors?

Hi Shark,

Every chemicals, natural or synthetic, are hazardous for human. It depends of the quantity being in contact with it, where is the contact occured, and the mix with another chemicals.

Example, bread (with its 20 or more ingredients we put into the manufacturing of this vital item) has disastrous effect on human beings. Obesity and its consequences are killing more people all around the world than "asbestos" did, do, and will do for centuries. No one medical group protest to stop to sell bread, isn't it? How come? The medical staff has customers!

Asbestos creates health problems when it is absorbed by a cigarette smoker. I personally see and talk with a worker at Asbestos Quebec, Canada in the early 70s who lost his brother 2 years younger because he was a cigarette smoker. The older brother still living individual, non-smoker, still worked at Johns Mainville, producing at that place only asbestos, after over 4 years of the death of the brother. He was declared healthy by doctors. Surprising, isn't it?!

I think, if my information is good, Canada was, is, and will be the biggest producer of asbestos, so, it will be criticized by other countries medical groups.

The World Health Organization predicted "millions of dead with the flu" early 2009, which never happened one and half of year later.

Doctors tell people to take certain pills, which kill many patients before taking off the market the famous prescribed and killing pills. LANCET or THE BOSTON GLOBE did mentioned?

Also, we have problems with car breaks (before made with asbestos and were efficient) because replacing products did not performed correctly we have accidents. Very little talk about that too, however, we counted our deads or victims.

To return to my first sentence, wait for an answer what chemicals, natural or man-made don't kill a human being? Describe in what conditions!? After my opinion, excess and abuse of anything can be harmful to us, Gil.

Maybe you should study up on asbestosis and learn the facts.

Asbestos is found legally in every day products just small amounts.
