Is Animal Testing Still Necessary?

Posted January 11, 2011 10:30 AM by Steve Melito

Two years ago, the European Union (EU) banned phototoxicity, genotoxicity, skin irritancy, and four other tests that the cosmetics industry performs on animals. Today, biologists perform these tests in vitro, using commercially available kits to culture cells that better approximate a human skin equivalent (HSE). Two years from now, the EU plans to remove exemptions for more complex toxological tests from its 2009 ban. But will the cosmetics industry be ready?

As research into alternatives to animal testing continues, cosmetics companies in Europe and North America are examining options such as pluripotent stem cells and new ways of culturing cells to simulate toxicity. Scientists are also studying other ways to evaluate the repeated-dose toxicity of specific chemicals. They're using silicon models to predict the effects of chemicals on humans, and computer models to predict long-term toxicity, too. An Australian laboratory has even created a 3D model with a dermal scaffold.

Yet the fact remains, as even the EU itself notes in a recent draft technical report, that alternative testing techniques probably won't be ready in time for the 2013 deadline. The EU report also recommends a series of endpoints rather than a single deadline. Is the 2013 ban simply unrealistic, or can the cosmetics companies do more to end animal testing today?

In my opinion, human cell culture and other testing models are the way to go, when it comes to research that needs to be done.

But I have to ask, why the cosmetics companies don't just steer away from untested or potentially toxic chemicals, and draw on the body of information already available in the literature and in their own labs. If safe alternatives exist and are known, why run the risk of toxicity at all.

Just test them on people like we used to do in the old days. They're less important than animals. <dripping with sarcasm>

If there's good reason to believe that something is completely harmless, then why not test in humans, if they are willing to volunteer and give a fully informed consent.

If there's not good reason to believe that the product is completely harmless, then why use it at all.

In fact there are lots of cosmetics sold today which are not tested on animals at all. So I guess the human consumer is the "test subject" in that case, as far as that goes.

Just my opinion but the whole cosmetics industry could dry up and blow away and my life would not be affected at all.

I agree that for cosmetics, animal testing is usually a needless activity. However, when it comes to research that can possibly save human lives (medical, safety, etc.) then animal testing maybe the only way to go. Certainly animal testing should not be done in a cavalier fashion. As much preliminary testing that doesn't involve animals should be done prior to the animal testing. The need for the animal testing must be real. The pain and suffering of the animals should be minimized as much as possible. Most importantly the experiment must be carefully scrutinized and approved before execution so that valid data can be obtained from the animal's service.
