Should Mark Twain Be Censored?

Posted January 08, 2011 1:46 PM

He was a great American author, but some say his novels about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are among the most misunderstood in literature. One thing is for sure: he used 19th century language that reflected contemporary racial biases that are an embarrassment to most people today. To restore this American classic to the reading public, NewSouth Books is publishing The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with the racial slurs expurgated. What do you think Mark Twain would say about this? Would you call this unnecessary censorship, or would you say it a necessary evil?

Do not rewrite history. It is a deplorable fact that this country had a period of slavery. How will Americans of the present or future understand the evil contained then if it is not represented accurately. This country has gone through war, death, and civil turmoil to learn from it's mistakes. Don't white wash the lesson to spare the feelings of those who benefit from the knowledge.

It's just a way for publishing companies to rake in some dough, just like rewriting college textbooks in order to sell new product. In this case it gets the added bonus of free publicity. Marketing genius.

I thought censorship was illegal? At least when it's this egregious. Do they have sole publishing rights? I mean, "to restore this...to the reading public"? Really? You can't buy the original anywhere else? Certainly you can borrow it. There must be 10's of 1000's in circulation.

Nope. Publishing companies have been doing this to almost every classic novel for some time. It's for the children, you know.

Perhaps we should censor German laguage as well as it has the word 'niger' meaning 'black'. Frankly, I've had it things being suppressed just because someone might be offended. There is just too much thin skin out there - whether real or imagined.

Just get over it. Nobody has a right to never see or hear something they don't like.
