Too Many Eyes in the Skies?

Posted February 18, 2011 8:00 AM

Drone technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, with many experts predicting a proliferation of drones for all kinds of purposes. Certainly, unmanned aerial vehicles have more than proven their usefulness in military situations, and it's easy to accept their role in rapid response data gathering after an earthquake, or in monitoring the health of remote pipelines, but is there a public interest threshold for applications? What about UAVs launched by private investigators or celebrity photo agencies? Should governments restrict the use of drones, or simply ensure their safe application?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Aerospace Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Aerospace Technology today.

Both! Absolutely!

I foresee a new branch to the radio-controlled airplane hobby: Drone-Busters!

The mosquitoes around here are bad enough, and I don't need a reverse Mohawk!

Could be interesting if they fly around here while I'm shooting skeet!

Space, sea and archeological excavations should come under UN. No government or organisation or individual should use them without permission from UN. Those who pollute them should be punished by UN. UN should have spy satellites to monitor activities in member states and sea or sky.

The UN? Really? The best way to make a bureaucracy/government more ineffective is to make it bigger and broader.

The space, sea, land etc should not become dump sites or un-monitored city roads without police.

The more drones... the Better!

Safer for ground personell (not being in the line of fire), real time recon, muliple units covering vast amounts of area, specialized sensor suites (I.R., X-ray, radar, radio linking over large areas etc etc...) who are the idiots saying drones are a bad thing?

EXPERTS?

NOT!!!
