Ready to "Crowd-Source" Your Design?

What began as a trend in the apparel business - consulting Web visitors for the best ideas on T-shirt design - is finding its way into the field of industrial design, says Desktop Engineering. One Web source, crowdSPRING, has hosted design projects for everything from cell phones and pasta shapes to toys and steam irons. Is there a role for this "crowd-sourcing" approach in engineering design? Can you realistically expect useful input from those outside your own company?
