Global Village and the 'Civilization Starter Kit'

Posted May 01, 2011 8:27 AM

Marcin Jakubowski discusses his transformation from a fusion engineer to an advocate of an open source hardware design initiative in a Technology, Entertainment, Design video. The Global Village Construction Set seeks to create 50 tools required to support a sustainable civilization. Hallmarks include interchangeable parts, low cost, and open source designs. Eight tools for industrial, manufacturing, and agricultural use are now in various stages of development. What do you think of this model for collaboration and economic opportunity?

What economic oportunity? Seems more a form of Utopian Socialism, when viewed through rose colored glasses.

"Hallmarks include interchangeable parts..." I followed and read most of the linked information. One item discussed (the best I can figure) is configuring EV's for multi-purposing: that is to say when I get somewhere, I take the power unit (motors, battery... everything) from my EV and use it to run a drill press, or a mixer at the bakery, or... or did I misread?
