You buy a product whose production and shipping costs are factored into your purchase price: when you're done with it, you pay to have it hauled away. Are Extended Producer Responsibility schemes fair, or are you just paying to have your rubbish removed twice?

I got from it that you would save money by not paying "to have it hauled away". He is, I determine, saying that the rubbish fee was already added by the manufacturer!! So, just drag it to the shed outback and hoard it.

But if this rubbish/return fee is included in the sale price, I have already paid it.

Batteries. Rechargeable primary batteries. We are encouraged to recycle these, and battery manufacturers are sponsoring nationwide (USA) reclaimation points for their collection. This expense is added to the retail price of them.

Why should I hoard something, or pay to dispose of it in the local landfill, that I won't use and the return postage is already paid? The return to manufacturer shouldn't cost me anything.
