Cool Cars: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

While cars in original condition have become widely appreciated over the last few years, most of the ones you see - aside from Survivor Corvettes, that is - are 1950s and 1960s sedans that have been well preserved in grandma's garage since the Johnson administration. Muscle cars and pony cars tended to get the tar beat out of them before high-school kids in the 1980s threw the Jeg's catalog at them. But not this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1.

I owned one of these back in the 70's. It was white, stripes were Red. 351 Cleveland block, Windsor heads, 4 brl Holly DBL Pumper carb, 4 speed turbo hydromatic auto trans ( didn't like it at first, loved it in the end) Only major issue, if racing you had to knock off the power steering belt. Anything over 130MPH the car was uncontrollable with power steering engaged, knock off the PS and it was almost limitless, I have no idea what top end was, I never reached it. Last known was 172 on NY State Thruway when it was concrete and smooth for about 40 seconds due to traffic.

I out ran several State troopers as this car handled back roads so well. The only changes I made to this was add M50's on the back with slotted aluminum wheels that stuck out 8" past the wheel wells. Gave great traction off the line, but sucked when it rained. Unfortunate it was an every day driver as the uni-body completely rusted away to nothing after 260,000 miles living in the Northeast... Who would have known a $3205.00 car brand new wold become such an item?? If I had a clue, it would have been garaged till today! And I would retire! Just to build a new electric car!!

As for gas mileage, @ $0.19-9/10, did any one really care? I'd blow through $5.00.00 in a single run through town. And the meet at 4 mile Point, I'd blow $10.00 in 2 runs.

Now, probably $90.00/Run through town.... Now doing electric! If I had a clue, I'd have that Mach 1 sealed and would have retired on it. My Dad hauled cars for Ford, he had the SHELBY on his truck to deliver to some testing track. I lost it sitting in that thing.

Speedometer was 220, Stick was 6 speed but channeled like a Ferrari, 30" high. Dad said that many guys took this for a spin in the yard before my Dad loaded it on his truck. Said burnouts were awesome. This post, Brings back many great memories of mt past.....

Now back to reality. Returning to regularly scheduled programming.
