Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Unusual Engines - 1963 Ford 406

Posted August 03, 2011 8:00 AM by dstrohl

Most Ford 406-cu.in. V-8s used two bolts to secure the main caps, but a limited number of 406s built in 1963 used two cross-bolts through the skirt of the block for three of the five main caps. This 1963 Ford 406 appears to be one of those engines, found on a dealer's shelf and subsequently rebuilt. From the description:

"This engine is standard bore and stroke. It has been X-rayed and sonic checked, and decked and line honed. All flashings removed and all oil passage ways massaged. This engine was designed to run all day @ 7000 rpm and should produce in the neighborhood of 575 hp. All this and it runs on pump gas."

Wow! I have been a gear head since the 60's and as a Canadian I have never heard of a 406 Ford...Maybe an American only design?...272, 292, 302,312,352,390,302,351,427,428,429,460, etc, but never heard of a 406..

From the Pic...I am thinking it is a big block design.....

Thanks for the info.

P.S. Nice Headers!

The 406 came out in 1962 and was the NASCAR engine for 1962 racing season. 1963 was the first of the 427 and took the top 5 positions for the Daytona 500 that year. 406 was an over bored 390 and the racing version had the cross bolted mains in the center three journals. 406 was conservatively rated at 405 hp and induction system was single 4 barrel and a six pack of three two barrel Holley carbs. It was an ok engine and won some races against the 421 Pontiacs and 409 Chevies as well as the 413 Chryslers of the era.
