The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed 2012 renewable fuel percentage standards for four fuel categories as part its Renewable Fuel Standard program. The standards include 0.91% of biodiesel (1 billion gal), 1.21% of advanced biofuels (2 billion gal), and up to 0.010% of cellulosic biofuels (12.9 million gal). These volumes will increase to reach an overall target volume in 2022 of 36 billion gal. Are these standards attainable, and will they spur increased investment and interest in biofuel development?
