Is Wi-Fi Just a Transition Technology?

Posted September 07, 2011 8:11 AM

In recent years, the coverage of high-speed mobile access via 3G has started to compete with Wi-Fi, mostly in larger cities. Will mobile reception replace Wi-Fi based access points? Has Wi-Fi only been a transition technology? What will the next-generation mobile high-speed broadband technology look like?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electronic Product Design, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electronic Product Design today.

Most technologies are transitional.

This was my first reaction when I saw this question.

In my field (electronics) vacuum tubes have almost vanished. They are still used in some high voltage applications, and probably a few others I'm unaware of. They got us through until we could figure out semiconductors.

I am told that ships uses to be conveyed by the use of large numbers of oars. Someone decided to replace these with underwater screws, but not before experimenting with paddle wheels.

In the case of wi-fi there are many factors, some of which I don't understand very well. But as the longer-distance radio technologies become more robust, wi-fi will probably retreat into some niches.

Since I must maintain my reputation as an "out of the box" thinker, here is something more to consider: All our technologies have been developed basically to replace abilities we lost as we transitioned from "free" beings into body-bound beings. If we ever decide to start reversing that process, we could see a lot of "retro" technologies fall by the wayside. What if we re-acquired the ability to communicate telepathically? You could eventually throw all the wired and wireless communication technologies designed just for people away. Machines would still need them, though.
