Posted September 29, 2011 7:32 AM

Recent Microsoft and Google cloud crashes have exacerbated concerns about the reliability of cloud computing. And many corporate executives still believe cloud computing posses a security risk. But cloud computing offers a tantalizing opportunity to replace high IT capital investments with a pay-by-the-drink approach that could save millions. Are the savings worth the risk? Do the benefits outweigh the risks?

Ultimately if your software and data is in someone's else control AND you don't have copies? What do you do when the clouds open up and rains. Then the sun comes out and the clouds are gone with all your data/software. I guess you could regrow all of it. Is the lost in time/money worth the "savings/convenience" cloud computing touts?

I do not think its worth it at all.

Cloud computing is in it's infancy and large companies such as Microsoft and Google have rushed into the market with immature technology. In doing this they may have destroyed the credibility of the concept before it has had time to become established.

Security depends on software protocols and most common software contains areas that will not stand up to excessive loading, or can be exploited by hackers. One work around this is to limit use to those subsets of the software that are robust. Microsoft and Google have not done this! There are operating systems available that are much more secure than those touted by the major players, but they have been/are being developed by small companies without the financial resources to make a large impact on the market.

The benefits will certainly outweigh the risks in the longer term if you can wait for mature software. At present the marketing is ahead of the technology. Only get on board when the technology catches up.
