Jobs Can Still Go Green

Posted November 21, 2011 9:10 AM

With the Solyndra controversy, green energy jobs have come under fire, but is this criticism fair? Huffington Post opinion columnist Keith Brooks says no. As project manager for Blue Green Canada, Brooks says labor unions believe green energy and manufacturing will lead to more jobs, better pay, safer work conditions, and cleaner workplaces.

I have gotten to the point now with anything calling itself "Green" or "Going Green" or "Green this that or the other" to be about as realistically honest of advertising as if they were selling "high quality Cadillacs" made in china for $100.

As far as I am concerned "Green" is now the new term for sh!t brown.

Not a bad analogy and especially poignant in my neck of the woods. Sh!t Brown is the leader of the Australian "Green" (watermelon) party. Unfortunately he is effectively the unelected Prime Minister. While he is in "charge" watch the media for news of Australia's impending bankruptcy from a position of no Government debt and budget surplusses just a few years ago.

All of the elements of Greece and Solyndra combined are being foisted upon us in the middle of a global recession.

The hatred of farmers, miners, workers and any media game enough to say the emperor has no clothes (hate media in his words) is being turned into vengance via senate witch hunts and wholesale industry shutdowns.

Some of our traditional industries were the most "environmentally supportive" I won't use the offending "g" word. The ALP who are the lapdogs of the watermelon set closed down the only sustainable rainforest logging operations in the world (because they were so well managed as to be regarded as pristine) and continue to whinge about the antics of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brasil. Prior to this vandalism we could encourage, educate, assist and guide actions, now we are just a laughing stock.

I just want new technology to be able to compete in the open market without taxpayers supporting it, or paying premium prices for the privilege of using it. It should not be as dirty as coal, or create radioactive waste. Natural gas is my choice, we have plenty of it right here, and it is clean. The industry claims that it can provide 200,000 jobs for starters. People could also work converting vehicles to CNG, and setting up a distribution network, including in existing service stations. I don't see that we are going to be able to compete with China at making solar panels. We also don't seem to be very competitive at making wind turbines. I love them both, but we need the jobs here. Biofuels from waste is successful. Geothermal is hard to beat for heating in cold climates also.

In my opinion, paying a producer 80+ cents a Kilowatt hour for a product that is selling for less than 10 cents a Kilowatt hour will soon lead to no jobs, and no working conditions. When the green product is at, or even near, the actual market price, I will be more than happy to look at it again.

Well of course labor unions are for it. They are the "House"'. They pay dues and vote to keep the player, (government) in the game. The only losers are the taxpayers...............................and they don't count.

Wind? Solar? Electric cars? Take your pick and step right up to the table. Something will catch on.
