Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

TK-421, Why Aren’t You At Your Post?

Pathfinder Tags: Ford stormtrooper taillamp lenses

If you happen to have a 1933 or 1934 Ford, then thanks to the chopper community, you now have the ability to swap out your taillamp lenses for lenses cast in the shape of a stormtrooper. I can't imagine anybody will ever build an Imperial-themed hot rod, but if they do, they're well on their way with a couple of these. Other such lenses offered by No School Choppers include a unicorn, decorated skull, peace sign, praying hands, and Eazy-E. (via)

I had to think about the title... pretty clever.

I wonder if DVader1000 can use these?

Yeah, I posses a large store of valueless information. Ask anybody around here!

Where quiz comes from... as in the etymology of the word? I remember two: from the Latin "qui es" (who are you), or there is the story about a wager regarding a nonsensical word becoming the talk of London overnight. I think the true root of the word is uncertain.

This is not an unusual characteristic around here. I have always believed that most CR4 members would be EXCELLENT partners on pub trivia night.

[edit] After posting I checked for the root of the word quiz: I am pretty close, except the city of Dublin is the subject of the nonsense word origin. There are a few leaks in my storage tank, I guess!

must admit I usually forget to follow words down to there roots - in my younger days - talking primary school when I discovered words came from 'somewhere' I use to go to childish extremes. Later on I have (had to) over moderated this zeal.

What I am alluding to is that I have only known of one basis for quiz, being the result of some upper crusts' bet that he could have a new word on the lips of poms by the next day. As to who he was I don't recall and haven't gone trolling for it (yet)....... I've just done some trolling in the middle of typing this post and seems he was irish...

A side note, curiosity at work, pub I believe is not a common use american term, a very common aussie word though.

"As to who he was I don't recall and haven't gone trolling for it..."

One versions of history tells us that James Daly was the driving force behind the nonsensical word story. Believable as any, I suppose.

Pub, Saloon, Bar, Gin Joint, Public House, Lounge, Tavern... You can see these on many signs around the USA. The general sense of "An establishment serving beverages and possibly food" applies equally to them all.

I can't imagine why someone would NOT want a Star Wars themed hot rod. Then again, I am a proud nerd not afraid to admit I went and saw Phantom Menace in 3D a couple weekends ago.

Calnet42, it has been 8 months since your last Good Answer. Time for another.

"This comment is very useful/insightful with respect to the original Blog Entry."

I believe YES, and vote accordingly. Good find (and just plain old funny!).
