Model Something! Blog

Model Something!

Model Something is a place for engineers to show off their creative side using a number of different mediums to reproduce objects. Every week, an object of varying complexity will be displayed, ready to be modeled. Feel free to use any medium you'd like such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, pencil and paper, MS Paint, Inventor Pro, etc. but please reference what you used to make your model! At the end of each week, all submissions will be posted on CR4's Facebook page!

Don't forget to vote for your favorites!

If you have an object you'd like to see modeled, submit the photo and we'll post it!*

*No vulgar or obscene photo submissions, please

Model Something! 6/18/12 - Robots!

Posted June 18, 2012 8:30 AM by Mizuti

This Week's Difficulty: Varied

This weeks modeling challenge is a little bit more open ended, allowing more various skill sets to try and take a whack at it. The objective is to create a robot or android. It can be fictional like the droids from Star Wars, something from real life, or a unique creation from yourself.

As per always for this blog, all mediums of modeling are allowed, whether it be a serious program like Inventor Pro, or something a little silly such as Photoshop or MS Paint. Just make sure to include the name of your medium with your submission, and any sources you might've used! Last weeks entries can be found on CR4's Facebook page here!

Here's some pictures of robots to get your mind working:

Rosie, where's my slippers?

I'm not a robot, I'm a tin man...

Would you like to play a game?

But sir,, I could hardly be called a robot...

You'll see.....

Yes its no longer supported but I still find it does mostly what I need and it will animate also. Here is the fully rendered version.

Not bad for a CAD program. The problem with the older programs is that the renderings look dated. Even with the high end CATIA V5 that we use, renderings look "sketchy" at best. We use Deep Exploration for the renderings. The quality of the rendering module in the latest CATIA V6 now competes with some of the dedicated rendering softwares. Problem is it costs about 3X as much!

Another Truespace offering I did some time ago. I much prefer Truespace as its relatively simple to use but complex enough that I am still learning new tricks. The latest Truespace program is freely available but more complex and demanding re computer specs. I also have access to Solidworks but am still learning this one. Robbie I did the other night didn't take too long. Would be nice to see some more offerings. Do you remember the early Amiga ray tracers?

Not familiar with Amiga. I only got into animation and rendering for mechanical equipment about 2 yrs ago. Prior to that I was just modeling for typical mechanical and electrical design.

I tried my hand at 3ds Max and Maya but uh...yeah let's just leave it at that!. I realized quickly that as a mechanical designer, my mind works in precise geometry only...none of this wrinkled skin texture, real looking, creepin' me out, kind of stuff.

Yeahhhh, I'm not really expecting anything that technical. Very cool models though! They look like they might;ve taken a minute or two to do

I suppose I'll be the first the throw a lil' "something something" down.

Which was supposed to look remotely like this:

I'll work on it some more if someone puts something down better than that (not a particularly difficult feat)
